SM tests… Bee Good’s Necta Perfecta Beautifying Mask

We really fell for Bee Good’s range this year – they are the only British premium skincare brand to exclusively use British beeswax, honey and propolis in all their products and we gave them a #MMHA16 thumbs up…

So we were delighted to test their latest Necta Perfecta product; the UK’s first multi-tasking youth enhancing face and body enzyme mask to deliver targeted results & prepare your skin to maximise the effectiveness of your skincare, make-up and tanning products.

SM tester writes: “OMG, what a product. It comes in a huuuuge and posh looking jar, which costs £39.95, but I think a jar would last around 6 months, even with the extensive hammering I’m giving it!

The gist is that you can use it on your face, scalp, feet, hands, elbows… anywhere dry or ‘problem’ and it delivers a double whammy of an enzyme peel and a mega moisture all in one.

You’re meant to put it on your face either like a mask or like a cleansing balm (ie wash off with a muslin). The first night, instead of leaving on for 20 mins before bed I actually just fell asleep with it on – and woke up with lovely smooth skin!

I have also been using it on my feet – if you saw my cracked heels you’d probably be a bit sick – let’s just say the hot summer hasn’t been kind and I should have spent a bit less time in flip flops – but it was really soothing and dealt with the cracked, flaky skin and sore patches – I’ve been popping a bit on before putting my gym socks and trainers on too as it means I take them off to nicer looking feet after a workout.

You can use it as a scalp boost – I’ve been giving my head a little massage with it as the bonus effect is a volumising product that smells lovely (ingredients include orange, lemon and sugar maple as well as honey) – but you can just shampoo it out once it has worked its magic.”

Keeping your cool in the third trimester…

AKA how not to resemble a melted ice lolly at 38 weeks… 😉

Editor writes: Before my youngest was born a week ago  my only means of blocking out the sun was by standing in the shadow cast by my ginormous belly. Third time ’round pregnancy takes no prisoners and seemingly nor does the current heatwave.

Besides sitting with the freezer door open and scoffing Magnums, here are my picks for keeping your cool…

The Jojoba Company’s Moisturising Day Cream is a lightweight day cream packed with natural ingredients but the zinc in it keep skin looking matte but plump. There’s SPF (in case you forgot, because you were browsing Nameberry) plus the product comes in a clever dispenser which allows you to pump and squeeze, meaning that every splodge comes out of the tube (hey –  it’s good practice for breastfeeding…) Get this one from Ocado or StressNoMore.

I’ve also been mainlining Ark Skincare’s award winning Body Beautiful Conditioning Oil which is ayurvedic (nope, we can’t say it either) and smells divine (a bit like Aveda’s Love oil) and you can rub it all over your stretch marks, flaky skin, frizzy hair, swollen ankles (I could go on but it wouldn’t be pretty…) A little goes a long way, it’s not greasy at all (despite being an oil) and you smell like a sort of upmarket Moroccan spa (it’s rose and patchouli based, but in a morning-sickness-friendly way) – available online.

I’m a latecomer I know to Tresemme’s Keratin range but who can resist the lure of their 7 Day Smooth treatment when one’s hair goes through weekly torture via over-chlorinated kids’ pools, 30-second school run ‘up-do’s’ and ‘last in the shower, no time to condition’ situations. And that’s before the preggo hormones kick in to make frizzy like, supersize frizzy… Anyway – this one really does work, even if you just comb a few drops through and dry your hair under the dryer at the aforementioned pool whilst (with the other hand) feeding your toddler a packet of PomBears. Grab it from Superdrug as it’s BOGOF.

The Mama Wax at Strip

If having a presentable lady garden is on your checklist for the delivery room (hey, it’s gonna be the centre of attention for a fair few hours, right?) then a Mama-Wax from Strip (the waxing joint loved by celebs including Victoria Beckham) might be a better solution than jiggling precariously in front of a mirror with a LadyShave…

STRIP, London’s leading waxing boutique, offer an intimate waxing treatment for mothers-to-be, specifically designed to prepare and pamper the most intimate areas up to when the pushing begins. Just as every bride wants to look her best on her wedding day, expectant mothers should feel as calm and as comfortable as they can when their due date arrives.
STRIP’s maternity wax is designed to be as bespoke and pain-free as possible without compromising on effectiveness, leaving you soft, smooth and relaxed. All STRIP therapists are trained to the highest standards, and will advise on custom wax blends for individual clients. Most importantly, STRIP’s therapists understand that a body in the 2-3 Trimester moves and behaves differently during pregnancy and needs to be treated accordingly. In addition, STRIP’s sumptuous treatment rooms have superior beds which can be adjusted to support tummies of all sizes carrying precious cargo and the sorest, most sensitive backs. Strip also offer a selection of stylish maternity nursing bras and briefs in a variety of colours and sizes.
Prices are the same as a normal hot wax, however the treatment time is extended, and the therapists are trained to make sure the treatment is carried out in the most suitable and comfortable way for expectant mothers.

Our pick of… Summer facial cleansing

Sweat, suncream, make up, insect repellent – in this hot weather it all adds up to clogged pores.

Here’s our pick of products to help your skin feel dewdrop clean and saintly…

Merumaya Melting Cleansing Balm: we’re big fans of beauty brand Merumaya and the cleansing balm is a real game-changer as it goes on like a gel, rubs in like a massage oil and then melts and washes off with water like milk – leaving skin squeaky clean. Merumaya suggest you take it off with a cloth, but you could just as easily rinse in the shower, use a sponge or with an electric facial brush – it’s a really versatile product.  Sweet Almond Oil, Echium Oil containing Omega 3,6,9 and anti-oxidants all pack a punch to calm and hydrate – and it smells fab.

When we were asked to try the MOA Green Balm we had initial mental images of Kermit the Frog (maybe doing some lurid coloured wheatgrass shots…) But actually, this award winning product is a lovely shade of mint and tackles everything from bruises to stretch marks to (eek!) irritated piercings and tattoos. As a facial balm, it’s divine; simply rub a teeny weeny bit into your skin, then use the luxe bamboo muslin that also comes from the MOA range and prepare to see your skin glow with life. The ingredients actually stimulate the circulation, so don’t be surprised if your skin is a little pink (rather than green!) If you’re a die-hard fan of Eve Lom’s cleanser, this one is definitely worth a try…

AA Skincare Essentials’ Green Tea and Aloe Vera wipes are perfect to chuck in your handbag/gymbag/car glove box as they are super refreshing and lovely to cool your skin, as well as giving it a once-over. Suitable for all skin types, these wipes hydrate as they clean and are alcohol and perfume free.

MERUMAYA #BeautyHasNoAge Guest Post

MERUMAYA is a British made beauty brand integrating global intelligence to achieve skincare which is integrative and provides real anti-ageing results.

When they asked to send us a guest post, it got us all thinking about their #BeautyHasNoAge message. Did you see Vogue’s piece on Cyndi Lauper, for example? She’s 63 and still going for it with the statement colours and vintage chic – and looks amazing.

“When you’ve lost your spirit, that’s not good,” Lauper says. “A woman who is older doesn’t have to look like a grandmamma. She can look elegant and not conservative.” The secret to pulling off a bold bolt of color, she says is simply scaling back. “You can do any style of makeup if you’re older, you just need to do it light. Too much makeup will make you look older.”

Or how radiant did Jerry Hall look in her wedding dress when she wed Rupert Murdoch recently (the dress was Vivienne Westwood – another grande dame of ageless style)?

Anyway  – read what MERUMAYA have to say on the subject below and hopefully share some positive messages on social media?

Guest Post: Whether you are new Mummy, suddenly invisible because everyone’s first question is about your child, a Mummy navigating school gate protocol for the first time (me!), a Mummy that runs through airports in high heels, with a toddler straddling a leather-clad hip, there will have been times when you or one of your daughters have experienced beauty and age anxiety.Bag & Melting Cleansing Balm

#beautyhasnoage champions that your daughters should not feel pressured to look a certain way, in order to be part of the ‘cool’ gang, nor be depressed because her acne makes her feel ‘ugly’.  A woman in her thirties should not feel the desperation of a ‘sell by date’ for her beauty.  A woman in her 50’s does not have to succumb to anyone else’s opinion of what is age-appropriate beauty. Your mothers and women in their 70’s+ should still feel beautiful, relevant and heard.

I want women everywhere to positively take back control, for how we feel about ourselves. To revel in the liberation of making our own informed choices about skin care, to feel beautiful at every age and pursue our dreams at any age, to take pleasure in the positive aspects of ageing, and to appreciate our faces, bodies, brains and emotions.  I am inspired to help women ignite the courage within us, to take back control for our beauty-confidence.

After 30 years in corporate beauty, when decisions did not always seem customer-centric to me, I took the leap from employment to entrepreneur.  I created MERUMAYA® which is an evidence-based skincare brand, all about you, feeling confident about the way you look, at every age. We champion the positive goal of Youthful-Ageing rather than the negativity of Anti-ageing. Our famous Iconic Youth Serum embodies that philosophy and delivers results. Our hashtag is #beautyhasnoage and I mean it!

Last week, at the age Malekaof 53, I coloured my hair bright pink in defiance of what is deemed to be age-appropriate.  It feels liberating and I feel even happier. Walking down the street, some female neighbours shouted that I had made their day, by colouring my hair pink. Another in her 70’s told me she is often told to give up her heels and now has the courage to say, ‘No, they make me feel good’.

At an event a few months ago, I complimented a woman that in a world of veneers, the gap in her teeth was so beautiful and unique.  Later that night, she tweeted, Tonight a woman I’d never met, complimented me for something I used to be bullied about. I feel great. Spread happiness people.   We have to stop undermining each other.  We have to ensure our daughters won’t be bullied for their unique beauty, and we have to be united in this endeavor and apply some action. Will you help?

If any of this resonates with you and your experiences – if you have a daughter and want her to feel confident, beautiful, accomplished, liberated and happier, please join me in this mission.  As little or as much as you are comfortable doing is great:

  • Use the #beautyhasnoage hashtag on your social platforms and ask your friends to share too
  • Send us a photo holding a #beautyhasnoage placard and ask friends too, or do it as a group
  • Make a 30-60 second video (on your phone is fine), telling us what #beautyhasnoage means to you. Here is an example from a customer.
  • Use the #beautyhasnoage make up bag. Only available at and FREE as a gift with purchase or £20. A full £5 will go to the charity Look Good Feel Better, which helps women with cancer. I will pay taxes, VAT and admin costs, so no deductions.

My deepest thanks to Slick Mummy Magazine for their positive action in allowing me to address you here. Thanks in advance to YOU, for any action you choose to support your fellow women with.

SM tests… Beaute Mediterranea High Tech Hyaluronic Complex Concentrate

Formulated with high concentrations of different molecular weights of Hyaluronic Acid, this serum promises to penetrate deep into the skin, working on seven essential levels to diminish signs of ageing. We tested…

Editor writes: “Hyaluronic Acid is one of those buzz ingredients at the moment (it’s the main component of L’Oreal’s Laser Renew range) because it gets deep down into your skin and plumps it full of moisture; the theory being that wrinkles sort of iron themselves out from within.

This one – from Spanish brand Beaute Mediterranea – comes in a sleek bottle with the sort of pseudo-medical packaging that the likes of Kiehl’s and Blisslabs favour and a pipette to dispense, which is handy as a little goes a long way… The product itself smells like parma violets (one of my fave smells) and looks a bit like glace icing, so it’s almost a cupcake fix in a beauty routine…

The product is part of a range, but you can just use it under your regular moisturiser. It isn’t greasy and it sinks straight in. You probably won’t notice results straight away, but after a week you definitely will: brighter, smoother, baby soft skin…”

Beaute Mediterranea High Tech Hyaluronic Complex is available from Face the Future and there are multibuy discounts across the product range too.

Your skin, only a grape deal better…

We’ve often convinced ourselves of the benefits of grapes (normally in a ‘medicinal’ Pinot Noir) but as a result of an educational evening courtesy of the clever types at chic Parisian beautyInstagramCapture_4f1f6ba6-5cba-4110-bf89-57ac5c874894 brand Caudalie, we now know that grapes are jolly good for one’s skin as well.

In fact, they have created an entire Vinosource collection – harnessing the wonderful powers of grape water – including facial mist (great for keeping in your handbag for long, sweaty journeys …and works on baby bottoms too!) and four moisturisers, including for sensitive and dry skin, plus a clever mattifying one.

The whole collection is delightfully pink and Caudalie decided to launch their range amidst rosy blooms, candy floss and marshmallows. InstagramCapture_ae58500d-2017-434c-8ef1-d2d4f3cbc061

Pink to make the boys wink? We think so…

The Vinosource range is available online and in stores now.

In praise of… apples

With blossom bursting out all over the place, we thought we’d give a moment of appreciation to the chic, simple, curvaceous fruit…

Apples are the top-note in the brand new fragrance from Jo Malone, Nashi Blossom. A sophisticated green scent that warms to a soft musky floral, this one is super wearable and playful.

Or how about some cheery red apples, bursting all over these unisex 70s print PJs from Jools Oliver’s Little Bird range at Mothercare? (right)

These dinky necklaces are perfect for that ‘Snow White’ moment and a steal at just £3.50 each…

Or snaffle Kate Spade’s limited edition ‘Far from the Tree’ apple shoulder bag – we’ve tracked it down on Amazon – with gold detail and a colour-pop pink cowhide shell.

Fancy planting your own tree? This one from Bentley’s looks great on the patio…

Our pick of stretch mark creams…

Some people swear by Palmer’s or just plain coconut oil. Some people say it’s all in the genes anyway. Some go for the prevention method of slathering on creams the second they see two lines on the test and others take the ‘make do and mend’ approach to reduce the damage.

Whichever theory stretch mark theory you subscribe to, we’ve rounded up a few of our fave creams…

Mustela’s Stretch Mark Prevention Cream from their chic Maternite range is light, easily absorbed (no running around in the nude trying to get the kids in the bathroom whilst waiting for it to soak in, then!), hypoallergenic and hardly smells of anything (‘just of clean babies,’ said our tester). The main ingredient comes from the Larch tree, plus there’s some beeswax and shea butter in the mix too…

Bloom and Blossom’s Stretch Mark Cream is super rich and thick – a little goes a long way and the base is almond oil so it has a delicate scent. Loved by Victoria Beckham, Kate Winslet and the Duchess of Cambridge, this brand pops up in celeb magazines almost as often as they do and the chic black and white pot looks great on your night stand…

Salcura’s Stretch Mark Cream takes consuming one’s greens to a new level, as active ingredients here are rose hip and green beans…But it actually smells like fresh cucumber. Can be used in conjunction with their Gotu Kola and Wild Rose Stretch Mark Oil which is a light, dry oil (our only criticism here is the dropper only holds a lil bit and we wanna use a lot, cos it’s lovely…)
