How to… cope with term time germs

It’s that time of year again when your little one’s classmates so generously share every snuffle and bug going. And we’ve all had those moments – we were thinking there should be a word for it – when you have to call your boss and say you need to stay home and care for a sick child (again!). You know that one: you hate the guilty vibes about taking time off work when your child is poorly but equally your heart is breaking because your bambino is streaming snot and tears…

Anyway. Prevention is better than a cure – and if it comes to it, a quick cure is a lifesaver.

Here’s our round up of sniffle stopping tips and term-germ fighting products…

WellKid Immune are part of the Vitabiotics range and contain vitamins and minerals to boost the immune system through the Winter months. Suitable for ages 4-12.

SM tip: they taste of citrus, so I give my kids one with a lemon fruit gum sweet as well. I know some mothers might roll their eyes at this but it works for me with my fussy pair…

Need some extra iron? Holland & Barratt’s PreVites are suitable for 3 and up and taste orangey (easier than a spoon of Floradix or half a steak!) or you could try ‘doubling up’ on iron rich foods: mix lentils in with baked beans or add berries in to fortified breakfast cereals.

And don’t forget toddlers are entitled to a free flu vaccination (it’s just a spray up the nose, not a jab) – speak to your GP before the Winter rush…

Keeping the family hydrated is all year ’round advice – uh huh – but we love warm Ribena as a vitamin C rich cosy Winter drink (get the sugar free one and serve lukewarm in a mug).

And stock up on the latest addition to the Nurofen for Children range: Nurofen for Children Cold, Pain and Fever – which helps parents manage their child’s temperature, sore throats, headaches and minor body aches.

Finally, Olbas for Kids on the pillow is a great way to send your dinky patients off into restful sleep. Effective even for teeny ones (3 months +) …

Or check out this cheeky froggy humidifier to pump moisture back into the air and aid breathing and banish little croaks.
