How to upcycle your 50 Shades gear…

If there was a foray to the Grey-side in your murky past, but now the Playroom is, well, a playroom – and ‘sorry, Mummy can’t cook dinner cos she’s cable tied to a chair’ doesn’t cut it – well, you might be wondering how to take your ‘accessories’ to the charity shop without a walk of shame…

But never fear, we’ve come up with a few creative ideas to upcycle your ropes, blindfolds and silk ties …

Hurricane Lamp: simple and surprisingly chic, use a preserving jar – The Things She Makes blog recommends an Ikea storage jar – and wind your unwanted bondage rope around it, securing with glue. Add a candle, a small plant, use to store crayons or cotton wool balls.

Superhero Masks: blindfolds can take on a new life, giving X-Ray vision. Either cut your blondfold freestyle or cut a template first and lay over the top… Stitch inside the eye holes to prevent fraying and you may need to shorten the elastic for tiny ones.

Table Runner: perk up a festive table with some silk tie table runners. If you want them to last then back the silk with some stronger fabric (canvas, or denim work well) and iron flat with a cool iron.

Editor’s Tip: if you have excess gaffer tape, take inspiration from artist Benjamin Murphy – he creates incredible pictures using just tape and a craft knife…
