Date Night: Dinner at the Twits’ courtesy of @bompasandparr

If your other half has started sporting unkempt (maybe it started as hipster) facial hair or wiping his mouth on his sleeve then give him a date night of the truly disgusting variety, courtesy of gastro-wizards Bompas and Parr, immersive theatre peeps Les Enfants Terribles and creatives Creature of London.

Dinner at the Twits - Mr and Mrs Twit. Design by Samuel WyerBased on the best-selling and much-loved title from the world’s number one storyteller. For the very first time join two of Roald Dahl’s most exquisitely appalling characters, Mr and Mrs Twit, inside their windowless house and ghastly garden for a grown-up journey down memory lane. But be warned: Dinner at the Twits is not for the faint of heart or soft of stomach!

Your evening will include a banquet of deliciously disgusting dishes, to be enjoyed with homemade cocktails, Mr Twit’s special brew and Mrs Twit’s potent punch.

Fish the glass eye from your cocktail, take a slice of bird pie, and enjoy all manner of fabulously foul food while being entertained by your horrid hosts.

Celebrating a hundred years of Roald Dahl, in a year filled with gloriumptious treats, Dinner at the Twits is designed specifically for grown-ups – no chiddlers allowed! Roald Dahl’s unique blend of macabre humour and quirky warmth has endeared him to generations of children and adults. Dinner at the Twits is the first adaptation of one of his children’s titles specifically created for adults.

Produced by Emma Brünjes, James Seager and Oliver Lansley with Creature of London, directed by Emma Earle, written by Oliver Lansley and Anthony Spargo, and designed by Sam Wyer, Dinner at the Twits will run at The Vaults in Waterloo from 4 September to 30 October.

Oliver Lansley, of Les Enfants Terribles, said: “We are delighted to be presenting the first adaptation specifically created for adults of one of Roald Dahl’s hugely adored children’s books. We never really lose our sense of play, our relish in the bizarre and revolting. Dinner at the Twits will give adults the opportunity to explore those boundaries between disgust and delight, to come up close and personal with the hideous hairy Twits and to be taken on a multisensory journey through Dahl’s beguilingly bizarre world.”

Harry Parr, of Bompas & Parr, said: “We have always been fascinated by food taboos, and the gleefully grotesque universe of the Twits seems to us the perfect place to probe the limits of gastronomic experimentation. We want guests at Dinner at the Twits to be titillated, intrigued and surprised, and we promise that squeamishness will give way to scrumptiousness as you open your minds and your mouths…”

Pre-Instagram your picnic with Bompas & Parr and Mercure Hotels

You know when your kids make ‘sandwiches’ out of the yellow and blue Playdoh…? Well Mercure hotels called in food architects and jellymongers Bompas & Parr with the brief: ‘make the picnic food look like it has already been instagrammed’ – which is a slightly posher, more grown up version of the same thing, we reckon…

Monday 13th June 2016: Mercure Hotels has brought the classic British pastime of picnicking up to date for the 21st Century by creating a bespoke range of ‘Pre-Instagrammed Picnic Hampers’, allowing Brits to combine the modern obsession with uploading tantalising foodie shots to social media, with the age old passion for al fresco dining. The three hampers, created in partnership with contemporary food designers, Bompas & Parr, have been designed to fit the style, shade, and colouring of the UK’s favourite Instagram filters, meaning a picture perfect shot shared on social media for maximum likes, shares and comments. Including some locally sourced ingredients from selected Mercure Hotels’, the hampers will be revealed at the Mercure Hotels Picnic Event, taking place at Somerset House, London on Friday 17th June. Choose from:

  • Mercure Aberdeen Ardoe House Hotel and Spa Hamper designed with the Mayfair filter in mind. The yellow colour palate, supported by undertones of green, creates a relaxed, hazy look and feel, perfect for those wanting their shots to reflect lazy summer days. Bursting with flavour, the Ardoe Hamper features tea pastel sandwiches, sumptuous shortbread and crumbling scones
  • Mercure Box Hill Burford Bridge Hotel Hamper features a slight blue hue, mimicking the Hudson filter. A secondary filter of pink further brings out the clean feel of the hamper, which is stocked with blue cheese with apple and cider chutney, and a deceptively tasty blue loaf
  • Mercure Sheffield St Paul’s Hotel and Spa Hamper brings photography to life with a colour-pop indicative of the Juno filter. The delicate pinks and yellows used in the clotted cream and jam scones and Melton Mowbray Pork Pie

As a sponsor of Picnic Week, Mercure Hotels will offer a fun-filled day out for families and friends of all ages – offering visitors a chance to relax in the sunshine, enjoy an alfresco bite to eat or take part in a range of activities from wine tasting with Masters of Wine, Susie Barrie and Peter Richards to playing some giant sized board game classics.

Guests are welcome to bring their own picnics along with them to enjoy in the beautiful surroundings of the Edmond J. Safra Fountain Court at Somerset House.

Harry Parr Director of Bompas & Parr said: “In a world lived so digitally, sometimes things can appear a little un-real, so we were excited to see how we could recreate digital effects in a real-world way that also encourages you to go out and celebrate the real world to eat and drink. These colourful hampers seem just the antidote for iPhone-weary picnickers.”
