Fearne Cotton’s tips for busy parents

Upfront of her book launch this week, Fearne shares some parenting tips:

1)   Try and look after yourself! As parents, we put ourselves at the bottom of the list and we look after our kids, our families and friends and then we get exhausted and are no use to anyone. Finding a little time in the week which is just for you seems impossible but is very important.

2)   Eat well! Again, sometimes when you are busy and on the run you forget to eat meals or you eat whatever is in the fridge. I think taking a bit of time in the evenings when the kids are asleep to look at what you are going to eat the next day, maybe make a packed lunch for work or when you are out with the kids. Make sure you’re fuelling your body so that you have the energy and the stamina to keep up with a really busy family life.

3)   Don’t beat yourself up. I say that for myself as well because sometimes when you’ve got kids you feel like you are doing everything wrong and you sort of end up cursing yourself and thinking ‘why did I do that?’ or ‘why didn’t I do that?’. We are all going to have good days, bad days, tough days, easy days, so don’t beat yourself up.

4)   Treat yourself! I think it is really important in the week, or even every day, to have a little treat or little moment that is just for you to celebrate being a parent and give yourself a pat on the back. For me it’s having a really nice coffee, or whether it’s having a chat on the phone with a really great friend, just little moments when you take time to give yourself a well done.

5)   Buy yourself a really good hat because I don’t think I have ever had time to brush my hair before taking my kids to nursery or school. So, get a good hat and pop it on your head – job’s a good’n!

The perfect investment handbag for the modern mother?

Wyn tote in black from Born in Britain

Sometimes – in our world – there are two ways of looking at a parenting accessory: something that is built for the purpose and the most stylish it can be, or something elegant that can also fulfill the task. A great example of this (which has sparked many a debate across our team) would be the day bag.

Kate Moss and Birkin

Do you opt for one of the ‘elite’ luxury changing bags (Pacapod, Kerikit, Born in Britain, Tibi & Marl etc being some of our faves) or do what Kate Moss (obviously!) started the trend for all those years ago by just re-purposing a great handbag (in her case an oversized Birkin) to carry all your essentials – plus your kids’ too.

Pearl Lowe – in our Winter issue of the magazine – told us that she tosses all her daughter Betty’s hairbrushes and toys into her trusty black Prada and you’ll see the likes of Fearne Cotton stuffing their Aspinal of London Marylebone totes with blankies and wet wipes – along with their yoga kit.

Large Queen bag in red by Jardine of London

Mary Jardine, founder of Jardine of London, suggested: “,The small cross-body ‘Queen’ Jardine of London bag is the perfect investment piece handbag for the busy Mum who needs her ‘hands-free’ whilst juggling the children and everything else required when out and about.  Big enough for her iPad and the little things you need when you have your little darlings with you for a day out – but small and light enough to be worn cross-body.  Made from sturdy goat-skin leather – this bag is very durable whilst maintaining its chic and stylish designer look.  No fiddly closures to the lid here – just a satisfying click as the lid‘s magnetic closure shuts tightly down keeping your possessions safely stowed away.”

Kristin Cavallari with her Chanel GST

Claudia Valentin, Handbag appraiser at Prestige Pawnbrokers and star of channel 4’s Posh Pawn has this advice: “,I personally believe that every Mum should have the classy Chanel GST (Grand Shopper Tote) in Caviar finish for long lasting wear.  it’s a really practical bag in every way and yet, still an heirloom! It features a functional interior with large and safe compartments as well as maintaining a very chic style with its beautiful chain straps and of course its iconic logo. This piece is suitable for all ages as it’s a timeless design for all seasons and comes in different colours to cater for a selection of daytime outfits may it be jeans and a jumper or a maxi dress. These bags tend to retail new at around £2500 but we can source them via our online shop for around £1700 which is such a good investment. You can find one on the online shop  at a very affordable price. The other classic designer must have bag for the modern mother in my opinion is the faithful Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM. These bags can hold a surprising amount of ‘mummy paraphernalia’ and can be the perfect transitional bag from daytime school run to a beach tote whilst still looking super glam taken out in the evening for dinner. These retail around £880 new and we can source them for a little as £500. Again you will probably pass a LV onto your children as they are such a timeless investment.”

PS there’s still time to drop a few Mothers’ Day hints 😉

Fearne Cotton announces her new book ‘Yoga Babies’

Remember how we all ‘oohed’ when Fearne Cotton posted that ‘Kitchen Yoga’ snap?

Well now, TV and radio presenter (and renowned yoga enthusiast) Fearne has announced the launch of her new children’s book entitled Yoga Babies.

Complete with fabulous images from highly respected illustrator Sheena Dempsey, Yoga Babies will be released by Andersen Press on Thursday 7th September 2017.

The book features loveable yogi pre-schoolers, and the beautiful illustrations highlight a range of yoga poses the characters are trying. As children are being read the book, they can either have a go at copying the poses or simply enjoy the story and spot the funny details in the pictures.

On writing her first children’s book, Fearne said:

“One of my favourite times of day is cuddling up with my kids at bed time for a snuggle and a read.

Yoga Babies combines the joy of reading with my love for yoga, which I like to practise with my children at home.

Yoga is such a wonderful activity for all the family and has a hugely calming impact all round. It’s great for coordination as well as health and wellbeing.

I hope that Yoga Babies is enjoyed by parents as well as kids and that the book brings lots of joy and fun.”

Yoga Babies is released as a hardback on Thursday 7th September 2017, RRP £9.99 – preorder here

In praise of …Purple

Prince loved it, Chuck Bass loved it. We celebrate this regal hue with a pick of purple products…

How rock and roll is this leisure chair from Odyssey at Very? At just £71 it is much cheaper than other designer versions out there, but makes just as much of a style statement.

MAC’s ‘Smoked Purple’ might look scary in the tube but is actually quite wearable. Purple is in fact more universally flattering than red (it’s just a bit more ‘out there’) so sweep it on with an LBD and nude make up for a dramatic night out or just dab a bit and top off with lip balm.

Betty Jackson’s agapanthus scented candle from the Black range smells beautiful (actually very Summery, despite the black box!) Available in a box of three or one single.

Fearne loved her oversized purple scarf as a maternity cover up, and we love this grey and purple cashmere one from Allegra at Lux London.

SM: Which are your bestselling items?

Emma: Our personalised tee and handmade leggings are our best sellers. Our customers like the personal touch and as each item is made to order so they know they are getting something unique.

SM: And which do your own children like best?

Emma: Our little ones are currently only 10 months so they let Mummy know best for now but our ‘Happy until HANGRY’ tee was inspired by our Branding & Design Director – Steph’s son Teddy – for sure, he loves his food every 3 hours without fail…

SM: Where does your design inspiration come from?

Emma: We all discuss as a team and decide on a theme to fit the time of year and often collate inspirational images and quotes all year round. Steph then works her magic and we all pick together. We are very lucky as we all have the same tastes and normally agree on the same ones – we are very lucky to have such a great team.

SM: What considerations go into the garment creation?

Emma: We always pick soft, organic material that we know washes well, prevents fading and lasts. All our products are given the official
‘Mum test’ before releasing any products to market which includes numerous wear and tear by our little ones at nursery, crawling, washing, ironing – you name it. It’s important for parents to know that they are usable on a daily basis. Once approved our Production Director Cheryl gets to work and spends numerous hours hand-making everything from leggings, skirts, personalised dolls etc…

SM: What are the biggest challenges for you, running the business?

Emma: Juggling everyday life, being Mums, plus all our personal commitments is always the biggest challenge – isn’t it for everyone?!  But we love it and wouldn’t have it any other way…

SM: And your proudest moment?

Emma: Being accepted by Not On The High Street and selling our items internationally due to demand is definitely one of our proudest moments for sure. We still pinch ourselves daily that we are doing this and people like our clothing – It’s such an amazing feeling and we are so humbled.

SM: Which celeb kids would you like to see wearing Oh Arthur?

image: xposure

Emma: Fearne Cotton’s little ones would be cool but hand on heart all the Mums and Dads who send pictures of their children to us daily wearing our clothing are little celebs in their own right. Children from all over the world are wearing Oh Arthur – there’s no better feeling than that – they make our brand without a doubt…

SM: And finally (we had to ask) in your world, is everything black and white…?

Emma: Haha not everything, we would if we could. Don’t get us wrong, we love a splash of colour, but there is something about Monochrome, plus is goes with everything. But no, our homes are not just black and white, but we are working on it…

Holiday Hotlist: The Easylock

Let’s face it, locks have never been sexy. Even those Chloe Paddington bags failed to make them appealing.

But doting grandfather Bob Fitzjohn thinks otherwise and he came up with The Easylock – designed to give an added element of privacy to hotel rooms and additional security when your little ones think it’s fun to open the door of the holiday apartment and go adventuring…

“My thoughts were with my grandchildren when I designed The EasyLock . One day they’ll be off travelling the world, and I wanted to create a solution that would keep them 100% safe & sound, no matter where they stayed. My thinking in creating the lock developed into wanting to provide complete security to all others that may find themselves in a vulnerable position… whether a student in cheap lodgings, an isolated elderly person who fears living alone, or simply you or I when we stay in a B&B or hotel…”

We loved the design of this one; really clever, works on most inward opening doors, gives instant peace of mind and comes in fabulous Barbie pink!

Celeb fans of the Easylock include: Taylor Swift, Fearne Cotton, Millie Mackintosh, Karen Brady, Davina McCall, The Saturdays, Mel B, Abbey Clancy, Vivienne Westwood, McBusted & Samuel Jackson!

The EasyLock costs £24.95, with free postage in Europe, £4 worldwide. It is available in pink and silver and comes with a pouch.
