School Run Superheroes: Dr PAW PAW ultimate red balm

Like the original balm, the Ultimate Red Balm is loaded with fermented paw paw; nature’s ‘do it all’ remedy with the really silly name. But it also has a rosy tint. Our tester put it to the school run challenge…

SM tester writes: the trouble with most tinted balms is that one shade doesn’t work for everything. I have tried and failed with everything from Benetint lip & cheek stain (have you ever tried putting this on in cold weather? It doesn’t blend at all and is a bit like scribbling red felt tip on your face…) to Nars The Multiple (‘Malibu’ shade made me look like a drag queen, ‘Orgasm’ made me look like Beach Barbie…) and as for the rumour that Kate Moss gets ready to go out by dabbing some Laura Mercier lippy on her eyelids and cheeks in the back of a cab… well – I tried that too. It snapped. #Fail.

I’d already tried the original Dr PAW PAW – apparently it is great o nappy rash but I’d mostly used it as lip balm, cuticle cream (and once to sort out my eyebrows after a singeing incident trying to light a range oven with a match…) The only thing I’d ever fault about it would be that someone needs to invent a child lock as the tube looks exactly like a squeezy tube of paint…

The Ultimate Red balm  can be used on lips and cheeks. When you first apply it you think ‘gosh, that’s bright’ (mainly because it is 7.30am and you are so washed out…) but you can honestly just dab it on with fingers. It feels lovely (on your lips and cheeks) and it melts into skin to give a dewy but really polished red look. Think a lovely sort of NYC glossy red groomed Winona Ryder vibe.

Because it’s a balm, you can keep  applying (it is quite addictive) but the intensified look isn’t clown-faced, it’s really rosy and pretty. And it doesn’t give you greasy cheeks either (yes, I’m talking to you Eight Hour Cream.)

Definitely one to keep handy on the car dashboard, by the sink or i your top drawer at work (at least, until they invent the child lock for the tube…)

Holiday Slick Mummy Moment… Kate Moss

We’re really getting into the holiday groove at SM Towers this week and so (whilst the other Kate M might be about to have another moment in the spotlight) we’re paying tribute to our fave Slick Mummy Kate – and nobody does holiday Boho chic like Miss Moss.

We’re loving the flower-festooned-fedora. the nearly nude lippy, the beige linen and the pouting toddler.

Editor’s tip: get the look with the oyster pink ‘Ocean’ blazer from Reiss.

How to do the School Run in your pyjamas…

You’ve got them up, you’ve sat through Peppa Pig and Fireman Sam with feigned enthusiasm, you’ve sponged the splattered Weetabix from the ceiling. You’ve washed them, you’ve cajolled them into tooth-brushing, you’ve lambasted your significant other for using up all the hot water. You’ve found them socks that match and rescued library books from the dog’s basket and – woo hoo – there’s still eleven minutes before school starts!

Kids -check, keys – check… Oh, right yes, dressing yourself would help, wouldn’t it?

Can you actually get away with doing the school run in your PJs (and still look like Elle McPherson) ?

We think yes, with a bit of creativity…

Go Vintage

It’s a thin line anyway between outerwear and underwear when you go vintage. Pillage charity shops or the Rosie for Autograph rail in M&S for bed jackets and camisoles you can team with a pair of jeans. No one will know you *actually* slept in them too.

Maxi Cover

We’re loving the Lexham wrap coat from Baukjen. Fashionably black, belted and below the calves – this one will cover up nightwear and give the illusion of equally chic, black tailoring underneath. Possibly like a French spy. Or Angelina Jolie.

Sweater dress over a nightie? Kimono over jim jams? No probs: if the top layer is fancy enough nobody looks underneath. Take inspiration from the Tudors, piling fancy embroidery over grungey underchuckers (or think Helena Bonham Carter in one of her ‘dogwalking on the Heath’ outfits)

A Boden wrap dress would be just the thing…

Not for the faint hearted, but styling up sleepwear with a bit of bling and bravery could be a good thing. Marc Jacobs A/W13 was right behind this look – and let’s face it, if you shelled out for MJ PJs you might as well get your money’s worth and wear them 24/7.
